The Grand Duchy of Pavonia is a vassal of the Caercian Consortium.

The Unification (380-400)Edit

For centuries, the isolated realm of Pavonia was torn by internecine strife. Deprived of the guidance of their ancient Faeren overlords, Pavonia split into dozens of feudal Houses. The three True Races of humans, Jaegers, and goblins fought against each other, against the Formor-touched abominations that lingered throughout Pavonia, and against other, stranger inhabitants, including the werewolves and vampires. Over time, blocs of power began to converge, as the powerful High Houses formed webs of alliances that bound the lesser Houses to them.

It was Duke Gilgamesh Fredric Klaus Wulfendyne, of the powerful High House Wulfendyne, that finally united Pavonia into a single realm once more. While the bulk of his unification was through military conquest, his masterstroke was a wholly different move. For decades, Wulfendyne's power had been balanced by the mighty High House Sturmvarous and its web of spies, assassins, and blackmail. So Duke Gilgamesh determined that what he could not conquer, he would recruit. He proposed an alliance between Wulfendyne and Sturmvarous, and sealed it by wedding his own firstborn, William Adam Adolf Wulfendyne, to the firstborn daughter of Duke Sturmvarous, Louisa Xesephina Sturmvarous. Assured of their place as the power behind the throne, Sturmvarous pledged loyalty to Wulfendyne, and the rest of Pavonia quickly fell into line.

Grand Duke Gilgamesh Edit

Grand Duke Gilgamesh pursued two actions more or less at once over the course of the decades immediately following his rule. While he immediately pursued the chance to develop friendships with his Jarrish and Salterri neighbors to his north, he also prosecuted war against the caverns of Novorogh, which he believed to be a part of Pavonia. Had the Muhlahrum Underempire not been in a period of anarchy, this might well have lead to the conquest and even destruction of Pavonia from the Salterri Imperium, with whom Muhlahrum shared a treaty. However, with the Ringmaker line in abeyance, the small dwarvish garrison in Novorogh was left unled and unsupported and was slaughtered in a series of vicious battles. The surviving dwarves fled to their home caves, while Pavonia moved in and secured its control over Novorogh.

Over the next decade, Grand Duke Gilgamesh was largely concerned with strengthening and stabilizing his new possessions. Though he sent four thousand soldiers north to the aid of the Salterri Qzare in the Salterri civil wars, his actions in his last years were distinctly isolationist. In 425, he passed from this world in a hunting accident, and his son, William Adam Adolf Wulfendyne, ascended to the throne after him.
