Marrik Sunder was the only son of Wiltor, Lord Sunder, by his first marriage, and the first king's champion of Jarrland. He was considered the best swordsman in Jarrland as well as a fine archer, although he failed to distinguish himself in international company at the Fourth Raaneki Games.

He had a reputation as a reactionary, in contrast to the usually progressive monarchs he served under. He was loyal to his kings, though, and followed their instructions no matter his own thoughts. Although, besides his father, probably the most powerful man in Jarrland not related to the king by blood, he was regarded by many  as an irresponsible adventurer, following his expedition to Sulvan's Fury to investigate happenings there, and his later involvement with the assassination of Tupelo Cornus. In fact both these expeditions were undertaken at the request of the king, and the former saw the recovery of the Printing Press for the kingdom, though that remained a state secret for a number of years.

He married late in life and had one son, born after his departure for the Jewelled Cities to kill Tupelo. He did not return from AQUA and was believed to have been killed, although a young man, Jogay Morris, did later reappear claiming to be his son by an islander woman and telling the story of what happened to him - apparently he fought on Tupelo's burning barge against several of his bodyguards, but was badly burned and left for dead in the water.

Seven years after his departure, in 408, his titles of Duke of Sunder and King's Champion were passed to his son Wiltor. By that time trial by combat had fallen into disuse. The adoption of King's Champion as a hereditary title caused embarrassment at the twin weddings of 415 when the ritual challenge issued by the thirteen-year-old Wiltor was answered by Li Tailong, and face was only saved by the intercession of the king's daughter Ambryn.
